St. Martin's Day “ was held on 11th November, to commemorate the harvest of crops & the moment when the grapes become young wine. For many years, the Portuguese have celebrated the “St. Martin's Day “as a way of connecting all Portuguese around the world. Since 2000, Hovione has been organizing this event to commemorate St. Martin's Day at Macau site’s garden. This year Hovione is also celebrating its 60th anniversary, the 40th anniversary of Hovione Hong Kong and the 35th anniversary of Hovione Macau. To finalize we all toasted to Macau and to this wonderful celebration.

Hovione is nominated for CPhI awards 2019 being shortlisted in two categories:   1. “API Development”, for its PRIME tool - Process Ranking of Inputs from Manufacturing.         “It is an honour to have been selected for the finalists’ panel, which is already by itself an achievement. The PRIME tool enables to grow our collective knowledge on chemical processes and being able to visualize how each project is evolving along the lifecycle according to several metrics; additionally, we can establish thresholds for different metrics according to our past knowledge and develop our process to meet those targets. We can also start to build automatically databases for e.g. the most frequent reaction conditions per type of reaction. The tool not only helps managing better our knowledge on chemical processes but also adds a lot of value for our customers” said Filipe Ataíde, PhD, one of Hovione’s scientists responsible for PRIME.   2. “Analysis, Testing, and Quality Control” for its Accelerated dissolution methods for extended release drug product.     ​“Extended release formulations provide many advantages to patients and greatly simplify treatment but carry a heavy burden in terms of quality control. The methodology presented here aims at reducing the burden on the quality control lab, by developing accelerate dissolution methods that shorten the API release duration from several months to a few days. This accelerates the analysis timing and still guarantees the quality of the drug product since a good correlation with the long-term API release is the base of this development. Most importantly, this development poses a very significant advantage in terms of patient compliance, particularly for drugs where administration is complex such as those administered through the ocular route, or when the risk of missing a dose is high, and also regarding drugs with a frequent administration for extended periods. Above all, it contributes to the patients’ well-being” said Mafalda Paiva, MsC, one of Hovione’s scientists responsible for this innovation.

On September 5th 2019, Hovione celebrated its 60th anniversary at the Cork site in Ireland. The third Hovione Sustainability Report has been published today, which aims to respond to the expectations of our main stakeholders. The Sustainability Report covers the fiscal years 2017 and 2018 and the four manufacturing sites. We have been complying with the Global Reporting Initiative Standards since 2015. On January 22nd Mrs. Diane Villax, Founder Chairman, received the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of Hungary. The decoration was handed to Mrs. Villax by the Hungarian Ambassador to Portugal, Madame Klára Breuer, conferred on her by the President of the Republic of Hungary in recognition of the contribution to the development of education of Chemical Engineers through helping students of the Budapest Technical University financially and professionally. The ceremony took place at the Hungarian Embassy in Lisbon and was attended by representatives of the Embassy, the Portuguese Government, Hovione, friends and members of the Villax family. Since 1993, Hovione has received graduate students from the Faculty of Chemical Technology and Biotechnology of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, alma mater of Dr. Ivan Villax. In 2008, a protocol was signed between the University and Hovione, which pledges to annually receive one to two students in the area of R&D, giving them financial and professional support. It was an intimate ceremony and Mrs. Villax expressed her appreciation of the award saying “this is the story of how the traineeship program came about and which is the basis of the honour I have received today. All I have to say is thank you very much and we intend to continue, our tag line "In it for Life" with many interpretations”.   Learn more about the Ivan Villax Traineeship

The ceremony led by the Portuguese Prime Minister awarded 13 Portuguese companies and personalities.
