billion in 2001. Simvastatin (Zocor®, Merck &
Co.) was the top leader in sales of worldwide prescription drugs in
2001, $US 6670 millions (26.3% increase in relation to 2000).
Simvastatin represents 44% of the sales in this therapeutic class.The market in United States valued 2,854 millions USD in 2001,
which represents 42,7% of simvastatin worldwide sales.

Marketed drug products
Zocor® is Merck Sharp & Dohme’s brand name for
Simvastatin. Zocor® was first approved by the FDA in 1991.
The pharmaceutical form of Zocor® is a coated
tablet, which contains as excipients cellulose, hydroxypropyl
cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, iron oxides, lactose,
magnesium stearate, starch, talc, titanium dioxide and butylated
hydroxyanisole as preservative1. The
pharmaceutical dosages range between 5 mg and 80 mg per tablet.
