  TwinCaps®

The long-acting neuraminidase inhibitor CS-8958, targeting avian flu, is currently starting Phase III trials in Asian territories and late Phase I trials in the US and the UK.
This drug product consists of a dry powder inhalation formulation, developed at Hovione, delivered with Hovione’s patented device TwinCaps® inhaler. Market approval is expected by March 2010 for Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and South Korea, as reported in Japanese media in attached image. Rival drugs Relenza (GSK) and Tamiflu (Roche) already on the market require twice-daily usage for five consequent days, while CS-8958 is taken via a one-time only inhalation, making this a much more competitive product, with enormous compliance and effectiveness advantages. The TwinCaps® inhaler was specifically developed by Hovione for the project and licensed to the consortium, to be used with the drug substance in the treatment of the H5N1 avian flu virus.

Hovione Ambassadors - assessing the first year of the initiative and its future

At the close of the first year of activity of the “Hovione Ambassadors”, the assessment of the initiative is very positive and promising. Contacts were established with the major schools of Portugal, where the ambassadors were able to create and develop personal ties, at the same time learning about what is being done in terms of research. As a result, four research projects were established with the Universities of Minho and Oporto and with the Instituto Superior Técnico (High Technical Institute). Simultaneously, Hovione held “Scientific Seminars” that allowed academic researchers to come to Hovione to present their works. Hovione aims to establish protocols of collaboration with at least 2 more universities and be recognized as “best employer”, attracting the best graduates from Portuguese universities.
