Health & Safety
Hovione has an Health and Safety Management System
(HSMS) in accordance with OHSAS18001. This system regulates all operations
to safeguard Health and Safety, ensure compliance, monitor related issues
and provide internal training.
The HSMS is regularly audited and reviewed.
Subcontractors also have to comply with defined procedures.
Health
Medical center, doctor and nurse are available on site.
Exposition to chemicals and occupational noise is periodically evaluated.
Safety
At Hovione, risk is routinely evaluated before, during and after activities.
Quantities of dangerous substances are continuously monitored and kept to
a minimum. Bulk solvents are bunded and are kept under nitrogen with pressure
control and cooling to prevent air emissions. In the industrial areas, closed
systems are available to avoid exposure to chemicals.
All areas are equipped with fire/explosion proof equipment Eex / ATEX compliant.
Fire detection and fire extinguishing systems are available in critical
areas and gas detection systems are also in place.
Internal and external fire brigades are trained and test emergency responses
with real life scenarios; local authorities (firemen and civil protection)
also participate in these exercises.
Risk analysis
Hovione uses recognized process hazard analysis tools to identify, assess
and control process and equipment hazards. Risk analysis are carried in
all areas where significant risk can occur before, during and after operations
and activities.
Sophisticated thermodynamic measurement equipment is available to carry
out the necessary studies for the process scale-up. It is at this point
that issues such as, reaction calorimetry, MIE (Minimum ignition energy)
recycling possibilities, effluent treatment, pollution prevention and safe
production operations are studied as a part of the process hazard analysis.
Hovione Technology Transfer Center in New Jersey was approved as a VPP (Voluntary
Protection Program) Star participant of the US Department of Labour which
recognizes sustained excellence in all areas of safety and health management.
