HSE compliance
At Hovione we have the perception of future needs
and of our own role as partners, promoters and providers of well-being in
society, not only because of our industrial activity but also in the way
we undertake it.
Sustainable Development is a huge challenge for the whole world, and progress
in developing globally viable solutions takes time and resources. Effective
co-operation between the different players in society, with emphasis to
the local community, is essential for this to become a reality.
Hovione's environmental philosophy is shaped by a belief that prevention
is always better than cure. By thinking Safe and thinking Recycling , Hovione
is making environmental protection a reality rather than a goal.
Hovione subscribes the Responsible Care program since 1995 and uses GreenCycle®
technologies as the cornerstone of its commitment to sustainable development.
Recycling reduces raw-material cost and waste treatment loads. Hovione scientists
always look for realistic and safe solutions.
Hovione has an Health, Safety and Environmental Management System in accordance
with OHSAS18001 and ISO14001. The system is periodically audited and reviewed.
Hovione Loures and Hovione Macau are ISO14001 certified and OHSAS 18001
certification is planned.
The ISO14001 and OHSAS18001 certifications are a further step and evidence
of Hovione commitment to integrate in daily management the basic concepts
of Sustainable Development: economics, pollution prevention and social responsibility.
At Hovione, people have well defined objectives and responsibilities in
order to improve continuously Hovione performance. Legal requirements and
performance indicators are monitored to ensure compliance. A comprehensive
programme assesses operations in terms of health, safety and environmental
risks. Equipment qualification and change control are well established routine
procedures. An internal emergency plan together with a crisis plan &
manual are in place and tested annually by setting up real case scenarios
– the emergency response is planned, prepared, tested, analyzed and
corrective actions implemented.
Complaints, incidents, near misses and other non-conformities are investigated
and are object of corrective and preventive actions.
Hovione actively communicates its HSE programmes and performance in a planned
and registered manner. Training is given to all members of staff –
in 2004/05, a total of 5662 hours of HSE internal training was given, representating
an average of 12 hr/employee,
Every 2 years an Open Day is organized for neighbors, local and national
authorities, suppliers and employee’s families and friends. School
and university visits to the plant take place as often as 2 to 3 a month.
Regular communication and surveys are carried out with neighbors, clients,
suppliers.
Carefully controlled procedures govern every aspect of operations to ensure
all activities across all sites are safe, legal and socially responsible.
EINECS, ELINCS, PORD, REACH, GHS, ATEX, IPPC and several other legislation
is carefully analysed and implemented to ensure compliance.
We believe that all the information published here in this section, gives
evidence of our commitment to Safety, Environmental Protection and Occupational
Health within the API's business.
